En pensant à la période des fêtes, Elys ne s’était pas vraiment imaginé qu’à un peu plus d’une semaine de Noël, il se retrouverait à piloter un jet privé en direction de l’Australie pour rendre service à un ami. Il n’avait pas hésité, vraiment, and between the planning and the actual flying, he had been really busy these past few days. Which was good, Elys liked having stuff to do, and if he could be useful to someone by doing it, even better. Malgré tout, il était quand même pressé de rentrer. D’une part parce que sa femme lui manquait, and that he felt bad being away after what he had learned recently. He’d kept in touch as much as he could, but it wasn’t the same. D’autre part parce que faire un aller-retour improvisé d’un côté à l’autre du Pacifique, c’était fatigant quoi qu’il arrive, mais ça l’était encore plus quand la fumée des incendies qui ravageaient le pays venait compliquer les choses. Plus il approchait Sydney, et plus la visibilité était mauvaise, ce qui l’obligeait à se concentrer encore davantage sur ce qu’il se passait, au terme d’un voyage déjà très long.

Aussi sympathiques qu’aient pu être ses passagers, qui l’avaient remercié copieusement, Elys était donc bien content de finalement garer sa voiture devant sa maison, signant ainsi la fin de son périple. Valise à la main, il verrouilla son véhicule et se dirigea vers la porte, derrière il pouvait déjà entendre des monstres surexcités. Bon, c’était sûrement Jet, le plus surexcité des deux mais Echo ne manqua pas de venir le saluer lorsqu’il poussa la porte. Il remarqua bien l’odeur qui flottait dans la maison, mais les deux bestioles ne lui laissaient pas vraiment le temps de se préoccuper d’autre chose. Une fois les monstres calmés - à peu près - Elys pu finalement s’avancer dans la maison, pour y découvrir la table dressée et Luna, qui s’était mise sur son trente-et-un pour son arrivée. Hey, la salua-t-il, traversant la pièce pour venir déposer un baiser sur les lèvres de sa femme. Tu attendais quelqu’un ? plaisanta-t-il, en référence à toutes ces préparations auxquelles, honnêtement, il ne s’était pas attendu. Il n’était parti que quelques jours, après tout, they had been through worse.

Luna felt silly. She used to spend weeks sometimes months séparée de Elys. Why do something like this now? The Christmas spirit maybe? It was more about making things right. She “ruined” leur dernière sortie. Soon, will be their anniversary and they needed to celebrate it. Even if it had been a messy year and Luna wanted it to end on a good note.
Elys avait pu conduire un de ses géants jouets for the first time in way to long. Se sentir utile avait dû lui faire du bien même si Luna pouvait voir la fatigue dans son regard.
Enjoying the little kiss they shared before laughing about herself. It’s silly, I wanted to do something nice for you. Elle se retenait d’ajouter un simple désolé à la fin de cette phrase. Elle devait arrêter de s’en vouloir pour tout et pour rien.
I figured you’d be hungry for something better than my spécialité. Communément appeler des toasts un peu trop grillées.
Un sourire un peu plus large que d’habitude s’installa sur le visage de Luna alors qu’elle s'installe à table. Une boulette grise sortait de sa cachette. Oupsy. Luna really did it. A new friend showed up au refuge. A kitty that Echo loved before Luna even thought about bringing him home. Il s’était frotter sur son nouveau papa en ronronnant comme s’il le connaissait déjà.

Flying a fighter jet was tiring. Flying a private jet across the ocean was tiring too, for completely different reasons. If he had to sum up his trip to Australia in one word, it would be : long. He was glad to be home, finally. He was used to being away for a long time and yeah, at time he would get homesick, but after spending all this time in Concord, with Luna and his family, leaving again felt.. weird. Being welcomed by two crazy dogs, his wife, and the smell of food in the air. No reason to complain, really. It’s not silly at all. Thank you, he said, kissing her one more time. And I’m hungry, so it was a really great idea. Long hours could have that effect on you.

Elys retourna rapidement dans l’entrée, pour déposer son manteau… et y récupérer quelque chose, qu’il cacha soigneusement dans son dos alors qu’il venait la rejoindre à la table. Il n’eut pas le temps de sortir sa surprise qu’une autre surprise décida de venir se faufiler entre ses jambes. Elys baissa les yeux pour y découvrir une boule de poils gris. Picked up a new stray, I see. They already had two dogs, what was one more four legged inhabitant in this house? I guess you won’t need this guy, then? ajouta-t-il, sortant la peluche koala qu’il cachait dans son dos.

Maybe Luna wasn't good at being home alone anymore. But Even that was not a good excuse. They have two dogs already. Elle voulait un koala et avait fait ce qu'elle pouvait faire pour que ce soit possible. She couldn't help the one in danger, but this little guy vivait dans le froid before they took him in au refuge. 

It's Koala. But he is tiny you can call him Joey. Luna thought she was really funny. Elle avait pris le petit minou dans ses bras pour le tendre à son mari quand une peluche la surpris à son tour. Une échange de boule de poils grise et un grand sourire sur le visage de Luna qui adorait encore les peluche même à trente ans. Oh si, there will never be enough right? Pets or humans, really Luna would bring home any stray that needed it. 

Installés dans la cuisine maintenant, trois bestioles bien heureuses qu'Elys soit rentré. (Luna is one if them the cat just found out he exist) How did it feel to work a little bit? It was not his usual job but still ca faisait longtemps  que Elys était en arrêt et même s'il pilotait parfois ici, ça ne devait pas du tout être pareil. 

Is it worst than they make it appear  online? Cette tragédie affectait tout le monde really and Luna aurait voulu qu'il ramène tout l'Australie s'il aurait pu. He  did something though. And his wife was proud, it's already way more than other people.

Ils avaient deux chiens en grande partie à cause de lui - ou grâce à lui, dogs are great, always. Comment Elys aurait pu dire quoi que ce soit en découvrant que Luna avait décidé d’agrandir leur famille de poilus pendant son absence ? En plus du fait qu’il aurait été bien mal placé pour le faire… Ca ne le gênait pas le moins du monde. Donnant sa peluche à Luna, il attrapa le petit chat dans ses bras histoire de faire connaissance. Koala. Obviously.

Koala ayant retrouvé le plancher et ses deux autres amis à quatre pattes, la petite troupe les avait suivis jusqu’à la cuisine. Parce qu’à la cuisine, il y avait des humains… et de la nourriture. On sait jamais, un burger pourrait sauter de la table, gotta be on the lookout. It felt good. Exhausting, and different from flying a fighter jet, definitely. I don’t think I would do that for a living, honestly. Flying a fighter jet was physically demanding. He loved it, but he couldn’t deny it. Flying over the Pacific was long. Not fascinating. He still loved flying, but that type of flying as a job? Nope. Ca manquait un peu d’action pour lui, si on oubliait le fait qu’en approchant de l’Australie, les conditions de vol s’étaient fortement dégradées. It’s not… Better or worse. It just feels more real when you’re there, you know? I wish I could have done more than be a glorified taxi. I’m glad I could help… Mais ça a l’air futile, au milieu de tout ce désastre. Elys had a hard time feeling useless. He hadn’t been completely useless, and he also knew he couldn’t save the world and the koalas by himself, but it was still frustrating. Anything new happened around here? Australia was a disaster. They saw it enough on the news. Mais entre le décalage horaire et le temps passé dans les airs, Elys avait peut être quelques petites choses à rattraper, autre que l’arrivée d’une autre boule de poils dans leur maisonnée.

Luna savait qu’Elys retournerait éventuellement au boulot. She loved him with all her heart. Would keep him for herself all the time, but this isn’t fair. To him, or the whole world really. Le sujet avait été mentionné avant qu’il s’envole pour l’Australie. Il n’était pas certain de vouloir travailler encore pour l’armée américaine. Et pour plusieurs raison, Luna le comprenait. La façon dont sa disparition avait été gérée était suffisante pour perdre son côté patriotique, mais avec les choix du président du pays ces temps-ci, c’est difficile de vouloir travailler sous ses ordres. Would you ever wanna try something other than flying? Since he was mentioning that he wouldn’t fly commercial flight, Luna’s mind wondered. He had a second chance, he is strong and determined, he could do anything he really wanted to achieve.
What was happening in Australia was heartbreaking. Luna couldn’t what the news because of the way it upsetted her every time, but she also could not resist to read about it. She wishes she could help a little, but beside donating what she could, she could just watch and hope for rain. (She would be taking care of a real Koala right now, but it’s not legal.) It’s one family, but you got them out of there, it’s much more than lots of us can say. Elys was a man of action, she knew no matter what he could have done, he would not have seen it has enough.
Beside the Koala arrival, nothing really. Her job was the same and it wasn’t what made her eyes spark. Oh Jet est allé visité ses amis à la maison de retraite, everyone was happy. Jet était un chien empathique qui cernait bien les gens et qui ferait tout pour des câlins et Luna l’avait inscrit dans un organisme pour faire de la zoothérapie avec ceux qui en avait besoin. Il était comme son maître et aimait se sentir utile. Il ressortait toujours de ses visites bien fier.

Aussi loin qu’il pouvait se rappeler, Elys avait toujours voulu voler. C’était abstrait, au début. Il voulait juste être là-haut, dans les nuages, and the cape from his halloween costume wasn’t doing the trick. And once he had set his sight on the US Air Force, there was no going back. Sa carrière dans l’armée avait toujours été censée avoir une fin, mais elle n’était pas censée arriver aussi vite. He could still go back, but somehow, he knew he wouldn’t. Il le savait depuis un moment déjà, vraiment, mais il lui avait fallu un moment pour l’accepter. He had worked so hard for it, it was hard to let go. C’est pour ça qu’il n’avait pas abordé le sujet, mais voilà que Luna l’amenait elle-même sur la table. I’ve been thinking about this, actually. A lot. Should he quit the army? What would he do once he did? Would he regret it? I love this job. Flying a fighter jet, there nothing like it. But… I don’t want to be away from home like I used to and I don’t want to put you and my family through that again. Il marqua une pause, jouant machinalement avec sa fourchette dans son assiette. And… when I was there, the first few weeks… I was sure they’d come get me. I just had to stick it out long enough, and they’d find me. No one did. They didn’t even try, and I don’t think I trust them the way I used to. So as much as that job means to me… I don’t think I can go back. How could he keep working for leaders he couldn’t trust? C’était comme si le monde entier l’avait oublié, et avait continué de tourner. Sans lui. And saying it had felt like shit was the understatement of the century. They offered me an honorable discharge a while ago and I think I’m going to take it. Ca faisait longtemps qu’il n’avait pas parlé autant de son boulot. Et même s’il avait à peine effleuré le sujet, il n’avait sûrement jamais autant abordé sa captivité face à qui que ce soit, en dehors du groupe de soutien pour les soldats atteints de PTSD qu’il s’était enfin décidé à aller voir. Jet, qui connaissait son maître par coeur, n'avait pas manqué de venir glisser sa tête sur ses genoux, comme pour l'empêcher de laisser ses vieux démons le rattraper. Sans surprise, il délaissa finalement ce sujet, pour partir sur un autre, qui restait toutefois dans la lignée de leur conversation. Anyway, I spoke to Julian on the plane, about the fires in Australia, and him changing jobs and… j’ai peut être une idée. Je suis juste pas certain qu’elle te plaise. dit-il, espérant que ses quelques indices mettraient Luna sur la voie. Elle ne plairait pas à sa mère déjà, ça c’était certain, même si entre son mari et ses deux fils, elle devrait être habituée depuis le temps.

Luna got into this life with Elys for better or for worse right? That’s how marriage is works. Her, now husband, always had big dreams.  Avant même que leur relation soit sérieux au point de planifier leur vie à deux, elle savait que sa carrière ne serait pas simple. Qu’il ne serait pas à la maison tous les jours vers dix-sept heure et qu’il avait besoin de bien plus qu’un boulot. C’était une passion, une raison de vivre qu’Elys avait toujours voulu.
L’armée l’avait longtemps comblé, mais vu les dernières années, ce n’était pas surprenant qu’il songe à aller vers autre chose. Jamais l’imaginer défendre leur pays était quelque chose qui rassurait Luna, mais elle le savait heureux et c’était au final tout ce qu’elle voulait.
Après une année de captivité encore bien mystérieuse pour Luna, Elys remontait la pente doucement. Doing things for himself. He was even apart of a support group for people that had gone through similar thing he has. Ou du moins, related to their army career.
To be sitting here with him opening up about what his mind has been up too was surprising for Luna.  Elle n’a jamais insisté pour qu’il partage ce qui l’habitait. She never liked to be rushed about her own feelings, so she respected his as much as she could. Attaquant son burger alors qu’il lui expliquait qu’il pensait qu’il était temps qu’il quitte officiellement l’armé. Surprise, it was one of the few time his time locked up somewhere came up. Briefly, but still. You know I’ll support you whatever you decide. Attrapant sa main sur la table pour lui montrer son support alors qu’il lui avouait en avoir discuter avec un vieil ami. If you want to become a surgeon, you’ll get out of med school around forty. Luna plaisantait. Then, she realized Julian was one, now he is a firefighter. Oh, you’d like to try out his new career. No wife would be thrilled to picture their husband in a fire. Let alone be the one going in there volontairement. Sauf que Luna avait l’habitude de s'inquiéter pour lui. Avant, c’était sur un continent différent. Now, fallait être optimist, she’d find out if he’s ok sooner right?
Tant que tu es heureux au bout de la ligne, c’est ce qui est important. Just call me if things get bad, cause I’ll be worried sick until I hear your voice. Elys avait eu droit à une seconde chance. It would be useless for him to waist it staying home safely if it didn’t bring him joy. Helping others was his thing and that’s probably one of the main reason Luna loved him so much. You probably looked up training right? When is the next one. Elle connaissait bien ce soldat, s’il en parlait, c’est qu’il avait fait ses recherches.

Il avait fallu un long moment pour qu’Elys accepte que sa carrière dans l’armée touchait à son terme. Il aurait pu y retourner. Peut être pas retourner sur le terrain, ou en tout cas pas maintenant, mais il aurait eu d’autres options. Il aurait pu trouver quelque chose. Arrêter maintenant n’était pas le plan. Arrêter comme ça non plus. Mais pour toutes les raisons qu’il venait d’exposer à Luna, et d’autres encore, il était temps pour lui de raccrocher l’uniforme - ou en tout cas, cet uniforme. Il rit légèrement quand Luna commença à parler médecine. En voilà une reconversion qui prendrait du temps ! Oui, la nouvelle. Je me vois pas vraiment retourner étudier pendant des années, je vais me contenter de pompier. Pas qu’il considère le métier de médecin comme inintéressant, c’était même sûrement totalement l’inverse. Clairement, on ne manquait pas d’action entre les murs d’un hôpital, mais reprendre des études pour les terminer à bientôt quarante ans ? Nope. Next selections and training sessions are this year. But I won’t go for it if you’re not comfortable with it, Elys said, squeezing her hand gently. He had put her through so much already with his choice of career. If she thought this was too much, he would try and find something else. I just thought… I still want to help people, and I don’t have to go overseas to do that. I thought about police for a while, it seemed like a natural transition but after everything, I kinda want to leave guns and violence behind. Sinon, il aurait tout aussi bien pu rester dans l’armée. That way… I can be home. And maybe at some point we can start thinking about that family we’ve been wanting for a while. Whenever you’re ready, I mean. Now that he knew what had happened to her when he was away, he didn’t want her to feel pressured to do anything. He already didn’t want that before he knew, really, but he wanted to make it clear. She was in control. Whatever happened would be on her terms. But he also wanted her to know he still wanted that family they’d been dreaming about for years.

Going back a few years back, more like about a  decade, Luna did not want to be in the middle of Elys and his dreams. She knew him way before that as the little boy how dreamt of being a superhero. No matter where he ended, she knew he’d have to help people. Feel useful. Do something with a purpose more complex than cutting people’s hair. She always admire this drive of his. Even if things got scary at some point. Even heartbreaking, he was still the guy she fell for a long long time ago. She did not put herself between him and his army dreams back then and she wouldn’t do it now that fighting fire was something he was interested in. Surtout qu’elle le connaissait bien, if he was talking about it, it meant he did his research and thought about it through and through. It wasn’t just a thought that popped  in his mind in his way home. You have to give it a try voyons! I’ll be there no matter what. Caressant avec son pouce la main qu’il serrait sur la table. When I said I do, I said yes to all your crazy ideas to you know. Like he said yes to all her crazy obsessions and need to rescue a koala-cat.
I’m proud of you. Adding a few words after biting in her burger. Ellen do serve the best burger in town, even the tofu ones. But not that long ago, she thought she had lost him forever. Then he came back and where most people would have gave up, he didn’t. He was still working to get to where he was before what happen to him, but the progress he did in what, two years, was a lot and she had to mention it. It’s true, having him working close to home was a big plus for them. At least now, when you work long hours, I’ll have three pets to warm the bed up for me. Taking a few second to really hear the part about their family. You think we’re ready? Smiling while asking this question. Anyone who knows this hairdresser know she wanted kids for years. The timing was just never right and she liked to be prepared for everything. But they were just starting to think about it. Relax Luna, no need to nest yet no baby was in the way. I mean, thinking about you with a mini us in your arms looks good. Really good! Slowing herself down, she is good at putting pressure on her shoulder. And she didn’t want to. Not with all the Kaleb stuff Elys had just found out. Things were already better now that he knew and understood why she could close off sometimes, but still. She was trying to deal with her anxiety since then. So not not trying was something she could do. No doing it when it’s ovulation time, no peeing on a stick every few days (we know she’d be able to do so), no forcing things with stupid advice from moms that won’t know they are cooking  until it’s in the oven. She’d get off her pill and will try  her to continue living has if they were no deadline. Au moins, à la caserne tu ne seras pas le seul à cuisiner. This thought came cause she realized she would have to learn if she’d want to feed their future child. Chasing it away with a deep breath. Trying to keep herself from overthinking already. Taking care of herself and her husband was all she could do right now for the best interest of their family. Kids in the future or not. I love you. Luna was happy to have her husband back, happy he helped out one poor family in this big Australian mess and happy to see their life going forward. Avec sa disparition and all the drama in town, for a while she felt like they were stuck. Just surviving, but now, they seem to be living again. Together and that’s the best part of it all.
